Khan, Shahadat
Born into a liberal Muslim family, Dr. Shahadat Khan was educated in the U.K., U.S.A., and Canada. He was a Fulbright scholar and received a Social Sciences Research Council dissertation fellowship. He taught History at the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh, from 1975-1987. His current research interest is in the Rational humanist Muslim intellectuals’ debate with Neo-orthodox and Islamic liberal groups in colonial Bengal.

Was awarded the Bangla Academy Literary Award in 1962 and Independence Day Award in 2012 (posthumously). This book examines liberal humanism through the comparison of two prominent figures: Northrop Frye, a Canadian literary critic and humanist from Western secular-democratic society, and Abul Fazal, a Bengali Muslim raised in an orthodox Muslim family who eventually became a literary critic and rational liberal humanist from East Pakistan (present-day Bangladesh). Although Fazal and Frye were contemporaries and unaware of each other, they shared similar ideas and belonged to similar professional backgrounds.
