Annunciations Poems Out of Scripture
Staudt, Kathleen Henderson

Description

These poems are called ‘annunciations’ because in various ways they respond to an invitation to meet and receive the holy in the midst of ordinary life. They reflect ways of saying ‘yes’ and sometimes ‘no’ to the mystery that reveals itself in the depths of human experiences and relationships: in the giving and enjoyment of bodily life in brokenness and grieving, in healing and hope.

Reviews

“Kathleen Staudt invites us to experience the luminous dialogue between the human and the divine in this new series of her poems. Staudt’s beautifully crafted work mines the holy in the human and shines a new and provocative light on stories and characters in both the Hebrew Scriptures and the Gospel story.” – Emily Blair Chewning, Poet in Residence, Wesley Theological Seminary

“Rather than derive a poem from scripture, Kathleen Staudt begins with quotidian life, crafting a path back to ancient holy words. Annunciations present themselves everywhere; in birth, feeding, laughter, music and death calling us to a fresh understanding, pointing beyond the event itself. Scripture rains down its wisdom, its own annunciations. In this exchange between the ordinary and the holy, both are changed and so is the reader.” – Dana Greene, Dean and CEO, Oxford College of Emory University, author of Evelyn Underhill and The Living of Maisie Ward

“Staudt’s poems take the reader inside Scripture, behind the familiar scenes and between the lines you thought you knew well. As a result, the ancient text comes alive, becomes intimate. The reader walks with God in the cool of the evening, laughs with Sarah, discovers what it feels like to be healed or be on the receiving end of a miracle. Staudt’s Annunciations put you on intimate terms with the Bible.” – Peter S. Hawkins, Director of the Luce Program in Scripture and Literary Arts, Boston University

“This volume is an annunciation of a beautiful new voice in religious poetry. Kathleen Henderson Staudt sings like a psalmist and prophet about our experience of divine insistence. Her poems are a boon to the spiritual pilgrim, a necessary guidebook to take with us on the rest of our journey.” – David Impastato, editor of Upholding Mystery: An Anthology of Contemporary Christian Poetry (Oxford University Press), co-director of Poetry Retreats

“Like a crystal clear bell, Kathleen Henderson Staudt’s Annunciations call us to enter the scriptures anew. Lending her insightful poetic imagination to biblical characters, including - wonderfully – God, Staudt gives fresh voice to the human and divine longing for one another…. Annunciations will enrich any Scripture study, meditation practice, or retreat.” – Peggy Rosenthal, author of The Poets’ Jesus and Praying the Gospels through Poetry

“It is almost a truism that religious poetry is the most difficult to write: so much it is either flat or sentimental. But not when Kathleen Staudt listens as she does to the biblical texts and interprets them for us with intelligence and feeling! Just when we might be tempted to think that these biblical texts have been mined for their riches so exhaustively that there is nothing new under the sun, along comes Kathleen Staudt! Her perceptive and lively readings open up the biblical stories in fresh and exhilarating ways. This is a book for savoring slowly, then revisiting again and again.” – A. Katherine Grieb, Associate Professor of New Testament, Virginia Theological Seminary
